No One’s Shopping At The Company Government Store

Politicians like to say government should be run like a business. So it makes sense that the Austin City Council created a store that reflects its own style of doing business — shifting costs that shouldn’t have been incurred in the first place to taxpayers.

Blindly following the lead of city manager Toby Futrell, council members apparently approved a retail outlet that is now projected to lose $250,000 over the next year. A lot of money, that, but less surprising when you consider that the wife of Futrell’s chief financial officer got the contract to run it.

Word is that Futrell’s chief apologist, councilmember Lee Leffingwell, has already filled out a job application to work behind the counter after he loses his re-election bid next year.

  2. Isn’t the store shutting down? What’s Leff going to do? Ain’t he a bit old to fly anymore? There’s a hurricane coming named Jason.
