Beat To A Punch (Updated)

No pun intended, but the Hatesman beat us to this cop story one:

Police union president resigns

Working on getting you the rest of the story before the spin cycle sets in…

I got his resignation letter right here:

To: APA Members
From: Jim Beck
Date: August 16, 2007
Subject: APA Presidency Change

Effective immediately, I am resigning from my position as the president of the Austin Police Association. According to the APA bylaws, George Vanderhule is now the president.

Last year, as the vice president to Mike Sheffield, it was never my intention to run for president. I was thrust into the presidency upon Sheffield’s retirement and I have taken this role seriously for the members of the Austin Police Association.
I was hired to be a police officer for the citizens of Austin and in my heart I believe this is the time for me to return to that role.

My immediate goal will be to work full-time to reestablish myself into the structure of the Austin Police Department, although I will always remain available as a resource to President Vanderhule and the Association.

George Vanderhule is a 37 year veteran of the Austin Police Department, with countless years of experience working to make this Association what it is today. He stepped into the role of my vice president and by working with him in that capacity I have no doubt about his ability to lead this organization.

  4. Sorry to see Jim go. Methinks he was too nice a guy for the job — that job still being very much defined by Sheffield and the boys at CLEAT.

I knew it was too good to be true; a reasonable chief, a reasonable APA prez…Toby moving on - all simultaneously. Well, 2 out of 3 ain’t too shabby.

So, like, who’s behind this blog?
