Mr. 39% to Head GOP Guvs’ ‘08 Efforts

Washington sources are reporting that Rick Perry, fresh from his 39 percent showing in the Texas governor’s race, will be tapped as chairman of the Republican Governor’s Association and its 2008 efforts.

The news is mildly surprising not just because of Perry’s anemic re-election last year in Texas but because the man thought to have been in line for the job, Missouri’s Gov. Matt Blunt, is apparently now saying he needs to focus all of his attention on his own tough re-election bid against a strong challenge by current state Attorney General Jay Nixon.

The Show Me State, like much of the nation, is drifting Democratic. Claire McCaskill was sent to the U.S. Senate last year, Nixon is coming on strong in the gubernatorial race, and Democrat Mike Evans announced just last week a strong bid for Lt. Governor.

According to Political Wire, “the Perry-for-Blunt switch is still pending official approval until the GOP governors’ vote at their annual conference in November, but savvy observers expect the change to be accepted without controversy.”
