Leffingwell Calls Those In Need ‘Debris’

Hapless Austin city councilman Lee Leffingwell has apparently called constituents who have fallen on hard times and are in need of social services “debris.”

American-Statesman reporter Kate Alexander’s Sunday story about the city’s proposed $2.5 billion budget points out that most of the nearly $1 million left to allocate will go to “social service needs, including additional money for the Austin Children’s Shelter, Family Eldercare and the Center for Child Protection.”

Leffingwell is quoted in the story saying “We know there is a great deal of need out there” to fund social service programs. “If they weren’t there, we would have to be picking up a lot of debris.”

Maybe Jennifer Kim has been whispering in his ear about panhandlers…Or maybe he was misquoted and meant ‘da brie’.  Yeah, he was talking about cheese.
