Nobel not Noble
Fresh from his re-election victory with almost-but-not-quite 39 percent of the vote, Texas Gov. Rick Perry first had his staff float his name as a possible vice presidential contender and then asked them to heavily promote a profile-raising series of Republican red-meat speeches to the faithful around the country.
Now he’s apparently positioning himself for a Nobel Peace Prize nomination by suggesting that the state’s two chief public pension funds divest themselves of investments in Sudan and Iran.
The Teacher Retirement Fund and the Employees Retirement Fund together oversee more than $135 billion. In TRS’s case, that amount has been reduced by $9 million in bonuses handed out to its investment staff, including a salary increase to $904,500 for investment chief Britt Harris.
Meanwhile, the state’s 1.2 million retired teachers have been waiting six years for an increase in their benefits. But hey, who’s counting?
Anyway, click here to hear a brief interview with the Nobel Prize Committee spokesman on Perry’s nomination.
