Couldn’t Get It Up

We told you yesterday that one of the items on the agenda for today’s Austin City Council meeting was a resolution that would make the city attorney, a key position, appointed by council members elected by voters instead of appointed by a city manager hired by… council members.

The proposal was apparently one vote shy, so Lee Leffingwell pulled it down. He and his fellow council member Mike Martinez had been promoting the charter change along with another that would do the same for the city auditor, also a key position.

With council members Sheryl Cole and Betty Dunkerley firmly against the proposal, its success depended on Brewster McCracken’s swing vote. I guess Leffingwell, Kim and Martinez just couldn’t jawbone him today.

  2. Why would anyone in their right mind vote against this? How bad is Leffingwell at persuading council if he can’t even get this done? What if he tacks a VMU onto it, maybe then brewster would get behind it!
