Dawnna Dukes Dreams of a Green Christmas

Our friends at Texas Weekly confirm whispers around the Capitol for the past few weeks now: that Democratic Dawnna Dukes is as big a spendthrift as the Republicans she supports.

Since 2000, the East Austin state rep has spent $80,000 using 19 different credit cards for purchases she failed to describe on her on campaign finance reports, as required by state law. In all, she spent nearly $300,000 of her campaign contributors’ money, mostly lobbyists, during the same period of time.

“There’s no way to know, for those purchases, who the Dukes campaign was doing business with, where she was staying on trips, or even the destinations of some of those trips,” Texas Weekly notes.

Last year, another Democrat — the late Frank Madla of San Antonio — went down to defeat for similar transgressions. “Nobody’s filed against her, but Austin lawyer Brian Thompson has filed a campaign treasurer report, which allows him to raise money while he decides whether he’ll get in,” Texas Weekly concludes.

  2. I’ve heard these whispers for a few weeks and I’m confused. How do we know about these expenses if she did not report them? Were they for campaign expenses? If they were just for daily living expenses, I don’t see why they’re relevant. We don’t pay our reps jack so we can’t expect them to all be comfortably well-off. yes, I know she has a day job, but who knows what kind of situations come up.
