Off To The Races

As usual, the Travis County action is found in the Democratic primary, which may be one reason veteran Travis County Republican Chairman Alan Sager isn’t running again.

Probably the most interesting local race this spring is a free-for-all among four candidates to replace their current boss, retiring Travis County District Attorney Ronnie Earle. Gary Cobb, Rosemary Lehmberg, Mindy Montford, and Rick Reed are all running.

Another barn-burner could be the primary challenge by former state representative Glen Maxey to longtime Tax Assessor-Collector Nelda Wells Spears. Maxey’s fact-fumbling in recent weeks may have cost him some momentum, but the race is likely to be noisier than usual — especially since Republican Don Zimmerman and Libertarian Mike Burris have also filed for a chance to collect your taxes.

As usual, there are some heated races for constable- including a three-way fight for the open Precinct 1 seat among Willie Joe Madison, Janie Serna, and former Austin City Councilman Danny Thomas.

  2. I see that the Statesman’s Marty Toohey is shocked — shocked! — this morning to learn that Judge Jeanne Meurer isn’t running for DA. Maybe his editors should take a look now and then at your website or some of the others that reported more than a week ago that she wouldn’t run.
