City Manager in Conservative California City Looks to Austin Job

Rick Cole has been city manager in Ventura, California, north of Los Angeles for nearly four years. Now he’s in the running to replace Austin’s own Toby Futrell, who retires in May.

According to a news story in Cole’s hometown paper, he was recruited by a corporate headhunter and has applied for the Austin job.

“The part that was intriguing to me is that Austin has set the goal of being the greenest city in America,” Cole was quoted in the Ventura County Star.

A source in that California town tells APR: “He is pretty bright and potentially a great city manager. Ventura is not really ready for him yet. It is still a pretty conservative city. Austin would be a perfect place for him.”

  2. This should be a public process like the hiring of Acevedo. Not involving the public sets up more dissension. Way to go.
