Eeny, Meeny, Miny, Mo/Where Will Ronnie’s Endorsement Go?
A whole generation of Austin voters has gotten used to electing and re-electing Ronnie Earle over the years. So when the Travis County DA-For-Life announced last month that we won’t be running again, it took a while for the reality to sink in. Eventually, though, four candidates jumped into the race, which with the absence of a Republican candidate will be decided in the March 4 Democratic primary, less than two months from now.
Trouble is, all four candidates currently work for Ronnie — first assistant Rosemary Lehmberg and assistants Gary Cobb, Mindy Montford, and Rick Reed. So will he give a nod to a preferred successor? Or knowing that he has to work with all four till the end of his term a year from now, will he sit out the endorsement sweepstakes?

It is hard to imagine that Ronnie would “sit out” the chance to signal who he prefers should succeed him. He has devoted a huge part of his adult life to that office and will want to leave it in the hands of the best person. Besides, who knows better than he does which of these candidates is best qualified?
