And Then There Were Two

The number of candidates to replace departing Austin City Manager Toby Futrell was reduced to two today — Jelynne Burley of San Antonio and Marc Ott of Fort Worth. Both finalists who were passed over for the top jobs in their current cities.

Out of the running is Futrell deputy Laura Huffman, because of despite the strong support she enjoyed from Councilman Brewster McCracken. Also eliminated from consideration was Rudy Garza, another assistant under Futrell.

The majority of the council obviously preferred to make a change by bringing in fresh leadership from outside the current bureaucracy. The final choice is scheduled to be announced next Wednesday.

  2. Que triste - McCracken and Huffman would have made an excellent pair as our next Mayor and City Manager. What ever will we do now…?

  3. Actually ,the final choice likely won’t be announced until the council meeting Thursday – at the earliest. Council interviews them again privately Wednesday – following a public vetting Tuesday – and will only be able to make the announcement at their council meeting the next day if they’ve finished contract negotiations by then, a big ‘if.’
