Perry Picks Another Loser (Updated)
Fresh from earning almost 39 percent of his own fellow Texans’ vote, Gov. Rick Perry threw his weight behind former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in the race for the GOP presidential nomination. Today, Rudy bows out of that race, having run what political observers are privately calling “the worst campaign of this or any other millenium.”
Perry surprised many by backing the pro-choice, pro-tax, pro-gay, anti-gun East Coast politician in the first place. This week, Perry flew to Florida to stump with the collapsing candidate. In a series of airport stops, the two failed to draw even as many as 100 people to a single event.
So with the presidential contest now headed to a March 4 Texas primary, Perry’s own favorite is no longer in the running. It’s a reminder of 1988, when then-state representative Perry signed on as co-chairman of the Al Gore for President campaign in Texas, against then-Vice President George H.W. Bush. Gore dropped out of the race that year before the primaries reached Texas.
Who will Perry endorse next for prez? With that kind of track record he might have to wait a while for the phone to ring.
