Austin Talks About Change, Ronnie Earle Talks About LBJ and Pickles
With the Democratic presidential candidates criss-crossing Texas to stump for “change” and “a better future,” longtime Travis County DA Ronnie Earle held a news conference today to talk about restoring Austin’s congressional seat to the glory days of Lyndon B. Johnson and J.J. “Jake” Pickle.
Earle endorsed Dan Grant for Congressional District 10, now held by Republican Mike McCaul. Grant is running against Brenham attorney Larry Joe Doherty in Tuesday’s Democratic primary.
“It is unusual for me to make an endorsement in a race that is not solely about law enforcement,” Earle said. “But crime trickles down, and the tone of corruption at the top is reflected in violence on the streets. In order to avoid the latter we have to clean up the former.
Earle went on to say that Grant “has seen first hand what happens when corruption erodes the peace upon which public safety depends…. he has worked as a warrior for peace, putting his civilian boots on the ground as a peacemaker in Iraq and Afghanistan.”
For the record, the District 10 represented by LBJ and Pickle (and Lloyd Doggett) was a more compact district than today’s, which now stretches from Austin to Houston courtesy of the contentious 2003 redistricting process.
