When It Comes To Single Member Districts, Will Won’t
Austin Mayor Will Wynn said yesterday that he won’t be supporting a ballot initiative this year on single-member districts, after sitting on the fence for months. As the swing vote, Wynn’s public pronouncement effectively kills the stop-start effort, which has has had trouble finding a vocal proponent beyond council member Mike Martinez.
The plan could be revived after the May 10 council elections, if no vote Betty Dunkerley is replaced by a yes vote and Jennifer Kim, who supports single members, survives or is replaced by Randy Shade, who hasn’t taken a public position on the issue.
Meanwhile, voters will get to decide on two charter amendments this November — whether to ban taxpayer-backed incentives for such high-end retail centers as the Domain and whether to set a fix term of service for the appointed city auditor. If SMD isn’t on the ballot then, it won’t have another chance for a couple of years.

When do we get to vote on what type of community service Mr. Mayor gets to do?
